Start with the symptom
| Symptom | Initial check |
|---|---|
| Menu text uses another language | iDrive language list |
| Assistant replies differently | Assistant language settings |
| Navigation cannot find an address | Maps, coverage and search settings |
If the required language is available, select it normally and check the result. Paths differ by iDrive generation.
If it is absent, record model, original market, system version and head unit details, including replacements. Model and country of origin alone do not determine the procedure.
Establish whether unit work is needed
Coding changes settings; programming writes software. Adding an absent language requires assessment of the particular head unit and software. A changed setting does not establish that all required language functions are present.
Choose work from the installed system and required result, rather than the general description Russian conversion.
Check navigation separately
Menu language affects text. Maps provide roads and addresses. Russian menus do not establish geographic coverage.
Check map version, region and search settings when an address cannot be found. Changing region may need its own procedure and permission. A map FSC is not a translation of every vehicle screen.
Example
On BMW Operating System 8.5 or 9, open Apps menu → All → Personal Assistant → Settings → Language. Select Russian if listed.
Issue a voice command and check understanding and reply language. Available capabilities can depend on language. If Russian is absent, this route does not explain adding it.
Check instrument cluster messages and a navigation route separately. The assistant setting confirms neither cluster language nor map availability.
Confirm the intended outcome
Test menu text and messages, a voice request and reply, and address search with route calculation according to the original task. These checks show which parts of the work are complete.
